Hemodialysis Initiation & Access Creation

Vascular access surgery (a permanent AV fistula, or a temporary tunneled catheter for immediate use) to allow blood to be filtered and returned safely, followed by starting hemodialysis (HD) itself: an artificial kidney machine filters your blood in-clinic. This is a life-sustaining treatment, not a cure — it continues indefinitely unless you receive a kidney transplant.

Peritoneal Dialysis Setup & Training

A soft catheter is placed into the abdomen so dialysis fluid can be exchanged there, using your own peritoneal membrane to filter waste. After a short training period you (or a caregiver) perform the exchanges yourself, at home or while travelling — either several manual exchanges through the day (CAPD) or an overnight machine cycle (APD). Like hemodialysis, this is ongoing, life-sustaining care, not a cure.

PD catheter placement is a minor day procedure under local anesthesia or sedation, followed by a roughly 2-week break-in period before the catheter is used. Training in sterile exchange technique typically takes a further 1–2 weeks. After that, exchanges are done every day, indefinitely, as part of your normal routine rather than as scheduled clinic visits.
