Overview

Surgical management of glaucoma lowers intraocular pressure to halt progressive optic nerve damage and prevent permanent vision loss. From gold-standard trabeculectomy to the latest minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS), international centres offer comprehensive glaucoma care for patients whose disease is not controlled by drops alone.

Your case is matched to a centre on the basis of clinical outcome data, not marketing. We coordinate every step — from pre-operative work-up to post-treatment follow-up — with a dedicated care coordinator.

What's included

Pre-operative IOP measurement, visual field testing & OCT optic nerve imaging
Glaucoma surgeon & anaesthesia fees
Implant device cost where applicable (MIGS stent, tube shunt)
Post-operative IOP monitoring and bleb assessment
Follow-up at 1 week with medication adjustment
Interpreter & patient care coordinator

Cost & recovery by procedure

This treatment category covers several different operations with different levels of invasiveness, recovery times, and costs. The country averages above blend all of them together — use the breakdown below for a more realistic, procedure-specific estimate.

Trabeculectomy

A partial-thickness flap is cut in the white of the eye (sclera) to create a new, controlled drainage channel that lets fluid bypass the eye's blocked natural drainage system, lowering eye pressure. It remains the gold-standard filtration surgery for glaucoma not controlled by drops, particularly for advanced or aggressive disease.

Typical recovery · 4–6 weeks

Performed under local anesthesia as a day case or single overnight stay; the new drainage bleb requires close monitoring with several follow-up visits in the first month, and needle revisions or bleb massage may be needed if scarring threatens to close the channel. Full healing and stable pressure control typically take 4–6 weeks, with risks including infection, low pressure (hypotony), cataract formation, and bleb-related complications requiring lifelong monitoring.

Glaucoma Drainage Tube Shunt

A small silicone tube connected to an external drainage plate (such as an Ahmed valve or Baerveldt implant) is inserted into the eye to channel excess fluid to a reservoir under the eyelid tissue, where it is gradually absorbed. It's typically reserved for eyes where trabeculectomy has failed, or for scarred, high-risk, or neovascular glaucoma.

Typical recovery · 6–8 weeks

A day case or overnight-stay procedure under local or general anesthesia; Ahmed valve devices lower pressure immediately, while non-valved Baerveldt implants are tied off and only become fully functional 4–6 weeks later once scar tissue forms a controlled capsule around the plate. Regular follow-up is needed to monitor pressure, and possible complications include tube exposure, device migration, double vision, and corneal endothelial cell loss over the longer term.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)

A family of newer, less invasive techniques — such as trabecular micro-bypass stents (iStent, Hydrus) or gel stents (Xen) — that use tiny incisions and microscopic devices to improve the eye's natural drainage, often combined with cataract surgery. MIGS carries a much safer complication profile than trabeculectomy or tube shunts but produces a more modest pressure reduction, suiting mild-to-moderate glaucoma.

Typical recovery · 1–2 weeks

Usually performed as a same-day outpatient procedure, frequently combined with cataract surgery through the same incision; most patients resume normal activities within days and use anti-inflammatory eye drops for a few weeks. Complications are typically mild and short-lived (transient pressure spikes, minor bleeding into the front of the eye), though the pressure-lowering effect is generally less pronounced and less durable than traditional filtration surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Glaucoma surgery is designed to preserve remaining vision by lowering eye pressure — it does not reverse damage already done to the optic nerve. The primary goal is to stop or significantly slow further deterioration. This is why early intervention matters: patients who act before advanced damage occurs retain more functional vision. Our partner surgeons will give you a frank assessment of your current visual field status and realistic expectations from surgery.
